ACTIVE INCLUSION
Facilitating Active Inclusion in Secondary Education
(FAISE)
A practical approach providing support and advice to schools seeking to achieve successful inclusion. The approach establishes essential criteria to encourage them to become fully inclusive communities, utilising all existing resources to their full potential.
Reinforcing active inclusion by formulating a strategy for its co-ordination and monitoring. The strategy then generates essential links in collaboration with local education authorities, schools and relevant agencies to ensure inclusion becomes part of the fabric of secondary education.

Our Aim is:
To provide a strategy for successful inclusion, which increases the awareness among both staff and pupils and seeks to achieve a considered, respectful response to the needs of all who would wish to be a part of the school community; ensuring entitlement and access to education for all.
For the pupils of today become the decision-makers of tomorrow.
The Current Situation
Children being placed in mainstream schools without appropriate support does not constitute inclusion.
Separating the physical ability from the learning ability is central to success the appropriate authorities (local education authorities, schools) still find it difficult to separate the two.
The continued inaccessibility of school buildings results in increased costs.
Implementing our Strategy
Local education authorities need to promote and fully support inclusive education.
Schools need to recognise the benefits of inclusive education to both pupils and staff.
Promotion of Inclusion by
Local Education Authorities
Inclusion of more children from special schools into mainstream schools.
Make as many schools as possible accessible, thus extending parental choice.
Actively promote awareness, amongst schools, of the range and types of disability of prospective pupils, BEFORE he/she attends a mainstream school.
To ensure that the educational statement adequately reflects the pupils abilities as distinct from their range of disabilities.
Inclusion Should be Reinforced in Schools by
Ensuring all staff maintain a clear understanding of the disabilities of any child seeking to attend a mainstream school.
Fully informing pupils and allowing them to actively question any aspect of a potential inclusion.
Being flexible and realistic.
Actively involving parents.
Having a designated co-ordinator to implement an educational programme and ensuring inclusion is being achieved.
Ensuring that a broad and balanced curriculum is offered within the provision detailed in the Statement.
